Why Weight Management Gets Harder After 40: Why It’s Not Just About Eating Less
Have you noticed that what worked in your 20s and 30s doesn’t seem to work anymore? Perhaps you’re eating well, exercising regularly and trying to make healthy choices, but the weight just won’t shift, especially around the middle.
You’re not imagining it. As we get older, our bodies change and respond differently to food. Hormones, stress, sleep and muscle loss can all affect weight and energy. Weight gain is not inevitable, but your approach may need to change.
That is why the answer is not simply to eat less.
When progress slows, it is natural to assume that restriction is the answer.
When people feel stuck and frustrated by weight, one of the first things they do is eat less, skip meals, cut carbs and increase exercise. Suddenly you’re spending your days thinking about food, feeling hungry and trying to be “good”. This is not sustainable.
Instead of focusing on restriction, midlife is a good time to think about how you can nourish your body, support your energy and build habits that you can maintain for the long term.
A helpful place to start is by asking yourself:
“How can I build a meal that keeps me satisfied and nourished?”

Don’t underestimate sleep and stress
Nutrition and exercise are important, but they aren’t the whole picture.
Poor sleep can leave you feeling tired and make healthy routines harder to maintain. Stress can also influence your everyday choices, energy levels and relationship with food. Sometimes the answer isn’t another diet. It might be getting to bed earlier, creating a better evening routine, taking time to walk, making space for yourself or finding ways to manage the demands of everyday life.

Here are 5 tips to try
Start your day with protein
Try eggs or Greek yogurt rather than coffee and toast alone.
- Build balanced meals
Eat balanced meals and include plenty of variety.
- Don’t wait until you’re starving to eat
Regular, balanced meals can help you feel more satisfied and make it easier to avoid the afternoon energy crash and out of control snacking.
- Move your body
Walking is brilliant but include strength training too. Maintaining muscle becomes particularly important as we get older.
- Prioritise sleep
Sleep is a huge part of your overall health and wellbeing. Aim for a consistent bedtime, create a relaxing evening routine and give yourself time to wind down before bed.
Aim for consistency, not perfection..

But we all know what we should be doing, right?
If it were that easy, we would all be doing it. Knowing what to do is one thing; knowing where to start and how to make lasting changes is another. With so much information available through social media and internet searches, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. That’s where personalised support can make a difference. As a health and wellness coach at Shawe Physio, I support men and women with sustainable nutrition and lifestyle changes, including weight management, perimenopause and menopause support (eating well for menopause), blood sugar health and building healthier habits.
My approach isn’t about dieting or starting over every Monday. It’s about finding realistic changes that work for you and your life.
If you’re ready to understand what might be holding you back and would like some personalised support, I’d love to chat. Get in touch to book your free consultation and take the first step towards feeling healthier, stronger and more confident in your body.
